Larassa Kabel's Death and the Good Life
Memento mori artist and independent curator Larassa Kabel presents A Ghost at the Feast, a show featuring her two newest bodies of work: Death in the Family and And the Rain Fell Like Rain and accompanied by selected photographs by Stephanie Brunia and Rachel Cox.

Death in the Family
Working together as the Belle Morte Collective, Larassa Kabel and Ben Easter have been creating performance based photographs for the Death in the Family series since the first one appeared in Juxtapoz Magazine in 2015. Based in the tradition of Victorian post-mortem photography, this work critically examines the artificial division humans make between themselves and the rest of nature. Using careful aesthetic choices and physical tenderness, the photographs democratize grief across species and transform each animal into a unique individual worthy of memorialization.

And the Rain Fell Like Rain
With And the Rain Fell Like Rain, Larassa Kabel continues her exploration of memento mori ("remember death") art by creating personal interpretations of ancient Egyptian funerary art and artifacts. Three installations reimagine the tomb, a “spirit house”, and the forty-two judges of the soul found in the Book of the Dead. “I make art to remind myself that we are all going to die. Me. You. Everyone we care about. It’s obvious, yet we go to great lengths to pretend it isn’t true. We all compartmentalize and distract ourselves so that we won’t think about it, but if we pay attention to the fact that we don’t have all the time in the world, we have the potential to lead better, richer, more connected lives.”

Mary Jones's The Map Room
A map room is not where one makes maps; it’s not a place where one looks to maps for directions. It is a space to ‘read’ the maps as the stories of their authors. Our living, and our thinking about living, is never objective, just as “no map is truly objective,” Jones notes, “but is a matrix that gets filled with the things the mapmaker thinks are important.” We are all tape and record makers, even mythmakers, cartographic designers tracing familiar zones, leaving traces of our experiences. The phenomenal work of Jones in her singular mapmaking is how the written word, the photographic fragment, the drawn human form—as it encounters, dances, poses—are perfectly catawampus.

515 Manifestival
This Juneteenth event's goal is to manifest and uplift a strong, active community of artists, performers, and entrepreneurs of color in Iowa that centers the most marginalized of us (queer/trans, immigrant/refugee, disabled, etc.). We hope to provide a space where the most overlooked in our community can come together, connect, heal, and express themselves through art. We are a major vendor at this year's Iowa Juneteenth celebration.

Although this event is very new, the talent that exists in our community is not. Nor is the need to carve out spaces where we feel free to fully be ourselves and see our culture(s) reflected in the broader community.
We will also be broadcasting the event live!

Becoming — An Interactive Installation
Join poet Mallory Abreu and artist Julia Franklin for an interactive experience at Greenwood Park's Rose Garden on Sunday, June 20, from 2pm—9pm. All are invited to write about the things left unsaid—to others or themselves—simultaneously contributing to a living art piece that illustrates how everyone's shame, grief, and anxiety can be transformed into something beautiful.

Set beneath a willow tree in the park, the artists will construct a life-size cocoon that participants can enter to view and hang handwritten letters from the structure, helping to "crystalize" the cocoon as more notes are added. (If preferred, participants can mail letters beforehand, or drop in an anonymous box on-site for privacy.) Clipboards and picnic blankets will be provided on-site for sitting and writing letters.

Everyone will have a part in creating their own metamorphosis, entering the space and helping to build an enclosure of tranquility and restoration from our grief and shame. These intimate letters will then be recycled into handmade paper by the artists to create a lasting collective artwork.

Though the CDC has amended its guidance for vaccinated individuals, xBk will be maintaining its masking policy and will re-visit periodically based on Polk County infection and vaccination rates. Our goal remains to provide you with a quality listening experience in a safe environment. Here are the protocols:
1. Capacity of the venue will remain reduced for all in-person events.
2. All shows will be seated and be in "patron pods".
3. Temperature checks will be required at the door prior to venue entry for all - including patrons, staff, & performers.
4. All patrons will be required to wear masks. Masks will be provided for those that do not come with one.
5. You may remove your mask while at your table, but your mask must be worn if moving around the building, ordering at the bar, or visiting the restroom.
6. All staff will be required to wear face masks and gloves.
7. Additional staff will be on-hand to clean high touch surfaces regularly throughout the evening.
8. Hand sanitizer will be available on all tables.
9. Sanitation and deep cleaning is completed nightly.

Sapient_2.021 by Amenda Tate
Sapient 2.021 is an experimental short film by Amenda Tate exploring what it means to be human in a tech-saturated world. This work is part collaborative documentary and part screen dance. It draws inspiration from science fiction combining Tate’s motion-controlled painting robot with dance and visual art to examine ideas surrounding labor, control, empathy, and human rights in the wake of 2020.

The work commemorates the 100th anniversary of the word “robot” introduced to the English language through the play R.U.R (Rossum’s Universal Robots) by Karel Capek. This project is supported by the Iowa Arts Council a division of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts.

This FREE public screening is made possible through a partnership with the City of West Des Moines Parks & Recreation Department.

If you'd like to be involved in this project, please consider making a tax-deductible contribution to help reach audiences throughout the state through public screening initiatives. Support our efforts to expand empathy through sociocultural awareness that celebrates the diversity of Iowans through the lens of shared humanity. RAYGUN x NIQ
Raygun presents Niq Thomas: myths or flowers; an installation.

Reception Thursday June 24, 5-7 PM.

The Greatest Store in the Universe and the Greatest Artist in the Universe are collaborating on a new installation in the second story windows facing East 5th Street during Art Week Des Moines.
Based out of Cedar Rapids, artist Niq Thomas (he/him) creates work that can be hard to categorize, particularly because his style evolves rapidly. Originally an abstract painter, his recent output exists in the overlap of collage, assemblage, and sculpture. Niq has shown work in venues throughout Iowa and the midwest, including the CSPS Gallery, the Polk County Heritage Gallery, and the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art. He also recently curated the Iowa Pop Art Market at the National Czech & Slovak Museum in Cedar Rapids. The event provided a platform for the diverse work of over 30 artists, creators, and vendors from across the state, many for the first time.

With “myths or flowers”, his first large scale installation, Niq continues to expand on both the visual language of his art and the thematic inspirations behind it. “I’ve been pushing my work to be more dynamic. I like creating something that changes based on when it’s viewed and from what perspective.” The current desire for bespoke art being higher than ever has also motivated Niq to create an artistic experience that is non-replicable from moment to moment with this installation. ”I want you to stop not knowing what to say when someone asks about NFT art and start saying it’s anything created by Niq Fucking Thomas.”

More Than Monoliths: Artist Talk with Ebere Agwuncha
Local artist Cameron Gray will host conversations with featured artists, diving into the beauty of Black creators and their creations. Each discussions will identify and explore how the featured artist defines themselves and their practice—whether they imbue their creations with an understanding of Blackness from their discipline, images of the Black body, historical American aspects of Blackness, or the beauty of African influence.
This project aims to dispel the notion of Blackness as a single monolithic experience, just as art can’t be reduced to a single form, media, or subject.

ARTIST TALK WITH EBERE AGWUNCHA
Thursday, June 24 at 7pm, via Zoom
Ebere is a Chicago born Igbo designer, maker, and researcher. She graduated with an Industrial Design degree from Iowa State University. Her conceptual work explores archived artifacts and images from the African Diaspora, preserving them into contemporary iterations through object design and abstract processing video. Ebere will take over @TheBuxtonInitiative on Instagram all through June.

All Week: Claes Oldenburg: Giants, Miniatures & Desserts
JUNE 18 – OCTOBER 17, 2021
BLANK ONE GALLERY
ORGANIZED BY CURATORIAL MANAGER LAURA BURKHALTERThis exhibition highlights Oldenburg’s strong presence in both the Art Center’s collections and the city of Des Moines. It will contain all of the Art Center’s works by Oldenburg with the exception of the massive Threeway Plug, Scale A (Soft), Prototype in Blue, which will be on view in the lower level of the Meier building. Prints, drawings, cardboard sculpture, and a model for Des Moines’ large public work Crusoe’s Umbrella will be featured. Justin Favela, whose work will be shown in the Meredith Gallery and Meier atrium this summer and autumn in Justin Favela: Central American, is the inspiration for this presentation, as Oldenburg’s soft sculptures and images of food are influential to his own cardboard and paper art.

All Week: Goya Returns
JUNE 4 – SEPTEMBER 5, 2021
BLANK 3 GALLERY
ORGANIZED BY CURATORIAL MANAGER LAURA BURKHALTER
Goya’s portrait of Don Mañuel Garcia de la Prada entered the Art Center’s collection in 1953 with the deliberate goal to add a traditional “masterpiece” to the museum’s collection. In recent years, the Art Center staff realized the need for the 200-year old painting to be cleaned and conserved. This delicate task has finally been achieved, and we are proud to re-introduce Don Prada to our community, looking literally better than he has in decades. In celebration of this return, the painting will be surrounded with the Goya prints in the collection, representing several of the Spanish genius’ satirical and nightmarish works.

All Week: Lesley Payne's 'Below the Median Income'
Below the Median Income is an art installation of visual and audio components to place the visitor outside the space they routinely travel. The audio components are interview recordings obtained from people involved with public or non-profit organizations. The interviews tell the visitor about where that person routinely travels. The installation contrasts Des Moines ranking as “Best in Nation” place to live, “Iowa nice” reputation of being overly friendly and go out of our way to help fellow citizens, and the visitors’ personal story.

The installation was inspired by two quotes: “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with,” from entrepreneur, author, and motivational speaker Jim Rohn; and on March 12, 2018, Director Joshua V. Barr Esq. of the Des Moines Civil and Human Rights Commission said, “We have seventy-five percent of students experiencing some form of poverty in Des Moines Public Schools, so what can we do to improve that outlook? Research has shown that if a person remains in an impoverished condition up through their adolescent years they are more likely to remain in that position as they become older and become adults.”

All Week: Manos: Selections of Latin American Art from the Des Moines Art Center's Collection
MAY 14 – SEPTEMBER 26, 2021
JOHN BRADY PRINT GALLERY
ORGANIZED BY ASSOCIATE CURATOR JARED LEDESMAThe title of this exhibition—Manos, or “hands”—is after a lithograph by renowned twentieth century Mexican artist José Clemente Orozco (1883–1949). Produced in 1930, the print is a sensitive yet fastidious study of forearms and cupped hands. Orozco’s delicate presentation of hands is especially poignant considering his interest in depicting politically charged art that focuses on the labor force of Mexico. Joining Orozco’s lithograph in this exhibition will be figurative drawings by Diego Rivera and Francisco Zúñiga, etchings by contemporary artist Miguel Condé from his noted “Guggenheim Suite” portfolio, and photographs by Graciela Iturbide, among other works.

Manos is organized by Associate Curator Jared Ledesma.

All Week: Tibi Chelcea's "Footprints"
Tibi Chelcea was trained as an electronics engineer in Romania (his place of birth) and came to the US to continue his studies. In his art, Chelcea is interested in using non-traditional printmaking techniques, such as capturing motion by printing with one's feet, and materials, such as using circuit boards extracted from electronics as the print matrix. The background of the flag actually comes from several large collages of such printed boards, arranged in the shape and colors of the Romanian flag. "Footprints" is an indication of how his background continues to inform his art, as the flag is both an allusion to his emigration to the US as well as to the technical name for an electronic component's pattern (footprint) which determines how the component is attached to a circuit board.
